General information and objectives

ICSU promotes international scientific activity in the different branches of science and their applications to the benefit of humanity. There are basically two categories of membership:
  • national scientific academies or institutions
  • international scientific unions

ICSU fulfils its responsibilities in a number of ways including the initiation, design and coordination of major international, interdisciplinary research programmes eg. IGBP, and via the creation of interdisciplinary bodies which undertake activities or programmes of interest to several member bodies. ICSU also addresses matters of common concern to all scientists, such as science teaching, often in cooperation with other bodies.

ICSU mobilises knowledge and resources of the international scientific community to strengthen international science for the benefit of society. Activities focus on three areas: International Research Collaboration; Science for Policy; and Universality of Science.
