General information and objectives

The central analytic objectives of the IDGEC project are to:
Focus 1 Causality: What role do institutions play in causing and confronting global environmental changes?
Focus 2 Performance: Why are some institutional responses to environmental problems more successful than others?
Focus 3 Design: What are the prospects for (re)designing institutions to confront environmental challenges?

The theoretical concerns of the IDGEC project center on understanding factors that determine the effectiveness and robustness of institutions. To pursue this agenda, the project directs attention to issues pertaining to scale, interplay, and fit.

IDGEC will play a prominent role in the IHDP strategy to promote cross-cutting approaches to research on the human dimensions of global environmental change. The Scoping Report has been developed in 1996 and a full Science Plan is expected in 1998.
