Das Biosphärengebiet Schwäbische Alb mit seiner Albhochfläche, dem Albtrauf und dem Vorland zeichnet sich durch eine sehr abwechslungsreiche Landschaft aus. Unterschiedlichegeologische Gegebenheiten, variierende klimatische Bedingungen sowie eine weit zurückreichende Form traditioneller Landnutzung sind Gründe für diese Vielfalt. Die charakteristischen Hangbuchenwäldern entlang des Albtraufs sowie die Schlucht- und Blockwälder erhalten im internationalen Vergleich einen besonderen Stellenwert.
