General information and objectives

ECSN is a joint venture of European National Meteorological Services which have signed a Memorandum of Understanding from 3 December 1992. The ECSN objectives are:

1. Provide a forum and framework for stimulating and supporting increased NMS collaboration in the fields of Climate monitoring, reserach and prediction.

2. Agree a programme of collaborative scientific and technical projects.

3. Identify and promote more effective use of existing climatological databases in Europe.

4. Establish free exchange of data products, model results and ancillary software packages, in support of climate-related studies.

5. Maintain models, including coupled Atmosphere-Ocean General Circulation Models (AOGCMs) for the benefit and use of the Parties of the ECSN.

6. Present to relevant authorities (e.g. the Commission of the European Union, ESA, etc.) proposals for collaborative scientific and technical problems.

7. Provide united recommendations and requests, in support of climate monitoring, research and prediction.

8. Promote supercomputing and telecommunication networks, and appropriate access of Parties to them, to maintain a leading position for Europe in climate monitoring, research, modelling and prediction.

9. Promote more effective exchanges of scientific and technical personnel within Europe, not only between the Parties but also between the NMSs and other groups and institutions.
