General information and objectives

It has been widely recognized, including in the Third Assessment Report of the IPCC (2001), that Africa is among the most vulnerable regions to climate variability and change. Critical environmental issues in Africa include food and water security, landscape degradation and desertification, coastal degradation, changing air quality, biodiversity, and vulnerability to climate change impacts. These issues have been identified as key environmental challenges for Africa by the New African Partnership for Development (NEPAD) and were also singled out as critical issues for the region at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development.
START’s research activities in Africa are consistent with the above-mentioned priorities. Africa’s scientific community is among the most overburdened in the world. Lack of funding, resource poor universities, and few opportunities for training limits the overall capability of the African global change research community. START’s capacity building activities, including the African Doctoral Fellowship Program and the small, targeted research grants program, are essential programs designed specifically to help address this need. START’s activities within Africa are coordinated by the Pan-African START Secretariat (University of Nairobi), with oversight from the Pan-African START Committee.
