Abstract:
Springs are unique ecotones at the interface between surface water and groundwater, which provide relatively constant environmental conditions for their inhabitants. In alpine springs conditions are especially harsh and organisms have to be adapted to low water temperatures and oligotrophic conditions. In the area below the water abstraction in the Clemgia valley in the Swiss National Park some places have been detected where water is upwelling in the streambed. It is unclear, if the water originates from groundwater or if water from the Clemgia is upwelling at these points. In the same area some springs emerge at the left bank of the Clemgia. They are not in direct contact with the river. In the master thesis of Lea Mühlemann 5-10 springs and points, where water is upwelling in the streambed will be ecologically characterised and compared with each other and with the Clemgia. The goal of the thesis is to investigate, if the water emerging in the Clemgia originates from groundwater or from the Clemgia itself. This can be verified by looking at hydrochemical and faunistic parameters. All springs and groundwater upwelling points will be mapped in June 2016. Physicochemical parameters and macroinvertebrates will be monitored in June and September 2016. With this thesis we will gain valuable insights into the hydro-ecology of the Clemgia in this area below the water abstraction. The springs may be important to hold up the water balance in the valley.
