Abstract:
As a post-glacial relict species, the mountain hare is a suitable model species for studies on the effects of environmental change on ??Alpine wildlife. Such changes are caused by climate and land use changes (incl. outdoor activities) or by hunting. We have therefore developed a reliable, non-invasive method for a long-term mountain hare population monitoring (1). We are currently using this method to investigate the population dynamics of a free-living, protected mountain hare population in the Swiss National Park as well as the interactions with other species (e.g. predators, European hare).
