General information and objectives
Founded in 1815, the Swiss Academy of Sciences, scnat, is the most important platform for the dissemination and promotion of the natural sciences. scnat is recognized by the Swiss Confederation as an institution for the promotion of scientific research.Aims:
To fulfill these tasks, scnat organizes hundreds of individualactivities and events every year: conferences and symposia, publications, studies and reports, as well as public events, and maintenance of information networks. Its central concern is to raise the awareness not only of the specialists but also of politicians and generalists of the role which the natural sciences play in the solution of our society's current and future problems.
Mission statement:
Support, promotion and development of the sciences as a cultural asset: in the current environment of global competition in third-level institutions and the private sector, SCNAT ensures that the critical mass of scientific competency in Switzerland is sustained. It’s guiding principles include exchange and networking, excellence, research diversity and the promotion of the next generation of scientists.
Foresight of problems of socio-political relevance: the exchange within and between the SCNAT’s disciplinary and inter-disciplinary networks gives us a scientific overview which acts as a basis for the early-detection of socially relevant problems, for which the sciences can provide future-oriented resolutions.
Dialogue between the sciences and society: through its network, SCNAT has access to the expertise and knowledge necessary for scientifically-based political decision-making. It engages in dialogue with the political institutions and promotes the understanding of the sciences among the general public.
