Abstract: The area under investigation is the middle and interior part of the Ötztal valley. The studies are concentrated in two communities, Obergurgl (commune of Sölden), and Gries (commune of Längenfeld). The two communities show contrasting forms of resource use and interaction with the landscape. The Ötztaler Ache river is a tributary to the Inn river and runs in a S-N direction. The valley cuts through some of the highest mountain ranges of the Eastern Alps . Obergurgl lies at the Southern end of the valley and has been developed into a fashionable ski resort with 32 hotels and 23 ski-lifts. The majority of the 427 Obergurgl residents work in the tourism sector. The village of Gries lies further downstream. In contrast to Obergurgl, the 210 residents of Gries show a smaller tourism sector with mostly day-tourists visiting the area.
