Research Focus of the Institute:

Our overall focus is to understand the environment, its present and past and its evolution on time scales from decades to a few 100,000 years.
To reach this goal we use a broad palette of physically based methods which range from model simulation, the analysis of numerous paleoclimatic archives to the application and development of new ultra-sensitive measurement methods of constituent and isotope concentrations.

The laboratory for Climate and Environmental Physics (Klima- und Umweltphysik, KUP), a division of the Physics Institute, has a broad and long experience in the discipline of Climate and Environmental Physics. Under the leadership of Professor Hans Oeschger, who headed the laboratory until 1992, several measurement techniques and modelling approaches in Climate and Environmental Physics have been pioneered and perfected over the last few decades. Building on this foundation we are involved in four main research areas:

* Climate and Environmental Modeling
* Paleoclimatic Archives
* Radionuclides in the Environment
* Development of New Analytical Techniques
