    Specialties of Chiara Uglietti:
My research interests are varied and mainly related to the study of the earth’s climate system and its history in the past and at the present time and the role that humans played and play in the environment. I'm also very fascinated by the role that atmospheric gases and aerosols play in the biogeochemical processes involving the biosphere and ocean.
During the Master thesis I studied the chemical composition and the microparticle concentration of an ice core retrieved in the Italian Alps within the European project ALPCLIM (Environmental and Climate Records from High Elevation Alpine Glaciers) with the aim of studying climatic parameters recorded in several alpine ice cores.
During the Ph.D. I worked within the European project CARBOEUROPE IP on high precision atmospheric carbon dioxide, isotopic composition of carbon dioxide (?13C) and oxygen observations from the high altitude research station Jungfraujoch (Bernise Alps, Switzerland) in order to comprehend the partitioning of atmospheric carbon dioxide between biosphere and ocean and to assess the carbon sources and sinks at the European continental scale.
During the Ph.D. time period I got the opportunity to participate to the NEEM ice core drilling project. I joined the Swiss and US teams to drill an ice core and to sample firn air with the purpose of studying recent changes in the isotopic composition of trace gases and interpreting the firn gas records.
Before the current research fellow position, I had a post doc position at Arctic Center (Rovaniemi, Finland). That research focused on the chemical analysis of a horizontal ice core retrieved from an Antarctica blue ice area with the intention of recovering high-resolution (annual) paleoclimate record.
My current research is focusing on the trace metal analysis of an ice core retrieved from Quelccaya ice cap, Peru. I plan to analyze a suit of trace elements including toxic metals in order to reconstruct the past history (spanning the last 500 years) of trace elements in the tropics. This ice core represents a distinctive opportunity to constrain the environmental variability of the tropics, in particular of the Peruvian Andes, which was affected by experienced pollution also in the past due to metals exploitation (for instance mercury used in silver extraction mines).
