General information and objectives

The Swiss Science and Technology Council (SSTC=SWTR) is the advisory body of the Federal Council for all matters relating to science, education, research and technology policy.

SSTC formulates general concepts for the attention of the Federal Council from the standpoint of science and suggests measures for their implementation. The SSTC, with the help of two attached centers (see below), identifies the information required for science, education, research and technology policy, and also undertakes technology assessment studies. The tasks of the SSTC were most recently specified in the November 15 1998 message of the Federal Council to Parliament on education, research and technology.

Center for Technology Assessment (CTA)
The CTA studies the effects of new technologies on society and the economy. Public debates (e.g. PubliForums) are organized for certain topics. The results are communicated to political, scientific, public and administrative institutions, as well as to the general public.

Center for Science and Technology Studies (CEST)

The CEST identifies and analyzes information bearing on research, higher education and technology. It works on the basis of mandates issued by the SSTC, and may also report to scientific and technological institutions or Federal or cantonal agencies.
