Research Focus of the Institute:

Urbanism and territorial dynamics
While the expectations and demands of society increase with regards to their quality of life, the pressure on our natural and build environment constantly grows. The qualitative perception of landscapes is also affected, including the performance of ecosystems.

Urbanism and regional planning provide two means of regulatory action faced with this pressure. These techniques of intervention utilize a wide range of knowledge from natural conditions and housing forms to economic, demographic, sociological, and political parameters. Architectural structures and the performance of infrastructure and networks are also used.Accordingly, Inter is committed to the renewal of territorial and landscape project approaches, while equally considering the quality of processes and products of spatial development.

Transportation and mobility
Vectors of economic development, transportation, and communication systems refer simultaneously to mechanisms of concentration and dissemination in space, with important repercussions on territorial modifications and spatial hierarchies. Technological progress and the multiplication of communication modes facilitate and generate mobility, yet their conditions of accessibility tend to reinforce social inequalities. In addition, certain transportation modes increasingly create congestion and negative effects, to an extent that the rapid growth of mobility constitutes a major political issue with regards to sustainable development.

Consequently, Inter is concerned with developing innovative solutions by bringing together transportation engineering, new communication technologies, and logistics.
