Dr Nijnik is natural resource and environmental economist (PhD, socio-economic and environmental problems of the development of rural tourism & recreation, 1984; PhD, sustainability in forestry, 2002), with many years experience in economic science and a broad international and interdisciplinary expertise. She is Honorary Fellow of the University of Aberdeen; Associate of the Institute for Rural Research, Scotland; member of the expert group of the UK Women in Science, Engineering and Technology; active member of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations; member of International and European Societies for Ecological Economics (country representative); member of the Royal Society of the Netherlands for Agricultural Sciences; member of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists; member of International Association of Agricultural Economists, member of the Board of the International Association for Society and Natural Resources (elected, 4 years, Pen University, USA); member of the advisory group for Agriculture and Rural Development (USA); member of the Scientific Board of the Journal of the Commission on Protection and Formation of Natural Environment, National Academy of Sciences, Poland; Academician (life member) of the Ukrainian Ecological Academy and member of the Ukrainian Scientific Society.

Maria represents the UK to the Management Committee of the European Union COST Action FP0703 "Expected Climate Change and Options for European Silviculture" (ECHOES) and is a member of the Steering Committee with the assigned responsibilities to c0-lead on Climate Change Mitigation by forests in Europe. Her advices concerning sustainable forestry development and on successful mitigation of climate change have been employed both at a national level, and internationally.
