Abstract:
Faunistics of chironomid fauna in a high elevation alpine system in the Swiss National Park (Macun cirque)
Dipteran Chironomidae are the predominant aquatic insects in all water types in the high alpine regions. The long-term monitoring of running and standing waters in the Macun cirque, initiated in 2001, has therefore focused on this family by larvae collection. Most of larval taxons were not identified to the species level by lack of morphological criteria. Furthermore, the exploration of the chironomid material suggested that two rare species colonised these habitats, thus the need of collecting pupal and adult material.
The project plans a summer survey with the installation of adult traps (Malaise traps) and a collection of pupae material along pond shores and running waters. All the chironomid material will be identified to the species level.
