Abstract:
This master thesis deals with the spatial as well as temporal variability in the intensity of use of wetlands. In the academic literature there is no standard use and definition of the term land use intensity. The preparation of convincing influencing factors in the land use intensity is of relevance for the realization of wetland conservation.
Within the scope of this thesis, the spatial and temporal change in land use intensity in the region of Sörenberg (canton of Lucerne) since 1800 has been analysed. The area analysed is part of the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch (UBE) and is part of two wetlands of national importance.
The methodology consisted on the one hand of the evaluation of historical sources that show the land use around Sörenberg, and on the other hand of the transcription and analysis of episodic interviews with farmers of this particular region. The aim of this thesis was to illustrate the relevant influencing factors on the change in land use intensity as comprehensively as possible. The differing perspectives of farmers from different generations were as important as the analysis of old school books, newspaper articles, and academic papers published on this topic.
Relevant for the spatial variability of the land use intensity are the ecological influencing factors caused by the location. The temporal variability is mainly determined by trans-regional, economical and social influencing factors. The direct payments, part of the Swiss agricultural policy, have a great effect on the land use intensity in Sörenberg. The paradigm shift from product-related to ecological direct payments towards the end of the twentieth century resulted in an extensification of agriculture. The farmers’ changed source of income contributed to a greater acceptance and esteem of extensive agriculture.
