Abstract:
Ongoing climate change is pushing forest ecosystems to important structural and functional changes. Interestingly, the new conditions are assumed to be stationary and constant across tree communities altough rising evidence points to important differences in the response of trees to the environment, either at the population or the community levels. In this project we aim at evaluating whether growth responses in a set of selected trees desynchronize and synchronize in time following environmental triggers such as global warming, enhanced drought, changes in snow, etc. We hypothesize that warming can be a major forcing for growth synchronization and thus whole tree populations might be at risk if every tree individual becomes vulnerable to the same climatic constraints.
To address the research question we will create networks of 10-yr windows to assess modularity (presence of modules or groups of trees) which would be indicative of tree growth responses differing among tree individuals. If we then project this static picture into a moving window, we can evaluate those periods in which growth synchronizes and therefeore also study potential triggers of this synchronization.
