Abstract:
Ecoacoustics are increasingly being used as a novel method of studying biodiversity, yet freshwater soundscapes remain under researched.
Since 2002, the Macun region of the Swiss National Park has been designated to long-term environmental monitoring. It is therefore a remarkable location to conduct underwater audio recordings of high-alpine pond and lakes. Data collected will a) provide a baseline for future acoustic surveys and b) provide materials for an art exhibition based on Alpine underwater soundscapes. In Macun, we will focus on different types of waters, including ponds, streams, and comparing those influenced by rock glacial inputs versus those not influenced by rock glaciers.
Switzerland is the birthplace of limnology and also became a beacon of Romanticism during the 18th Century. This project brings together contemporary art and hydrodiversity monitoring to embrace the Ecological Art movement and share progressions in freshwater science.
