Abstract:
The diversity and species composition of habitats in Switzerland has changed dramatically over the last century as a result of increasing human intervention. Mountain areas are considered to be close to nature, as they have many habitats with strong natural dynamics. Conversely, the consequences of climate change are most visible where human use and disturbance are small. The species most severely affected by climate change can best be estimated here.
Therefore possible changes in vegetations diversity and species composition of habitats will be examined in lower to middle altidude in the UNESCO biosphere Reserve (including the SNP) and the Lower Engadine. Historical data will be digitized and compared to the today's distribution data. The aim is to show which impact climate change or change in use could have.
In addition to processing historical data and answering research questions, the "Citizen Science" approach of this project should have a lasting effect beyond the duration of the project.
