Climate change causes species to shift their ranges to higher elevations to track the conditions they are adapted to. Depending on the species and locality, these range shifts and the resulting species richness on summits vary a lot. A potential driver of these differences might be the direct effect of human recreational activities. Humans are known to transport viable propagules on their shoes. Yet, not all species have the same capability to “hitchhike” on humans (namely, some seeds have appendages or shapes that facilitate attachment). In this project, I focus on the propagules transported by people on their shoes in mountains. What type of propagules do hikers transport? Do transported propagules have certain shapes or appendages? Is there a relationship between the number of propagules transported and elevation? Can the propagules establish into a new environment? I also asked participants to fill in a short survey.
