Abstract:
Biodiversity may be characterized at three levels, i.e. habitats, species, and genes. Most often, only species richness is considered when describing biodiversity. However, it is genetic variation that reflects the adaptive potential and, thus, the chance for a species to survive in an ever changing environment. Unfortunately, genetic diversity has never been considered when deciding on the delimitation of protected areas or when testing the effectiveness of conservation efforts.
The EU-financed project INTRABIODIV (Tracking surrogates for intraspecific biodiversity: Towards efficient selection strategies for the conservation of natural genetic resources using comparative mapping and modelling approaches) studies the relationship between species richness and genetic diversity of alpine plant species across the Alps and the Carpathians. Furthermore, environmental parameters are searched which best explain these two levels of biodiversity. This information will help to identify criteria relevant in the process of deciding on potentially protected areas which may complement the extant network of protected areas in the Alps and the Carpathians.
The objective of the present work is to test whether the results to be obtained on the large scale (mountain ranges) are representative for relationships on the small scale (down-scaling). Within each of five cells of the INTRABIODIV grid, comprising the Swiss National Park and potential regions for a new national park, the same sampling strategy will be applied in four quadrants. Genetic diversity will be assessed in a selection of flowering plants, using Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphisms (AFLPs), while floristic species richness can be derived from existing data.
Leading questions:
