Abstract:
Soerenberg is a popular destination for winter tourism especially for families and snow tourers. While winter tourism is vivid an well researched, there is little knowledge about summer tourists in that region. Especially its moores and mountains make Soerenberg an attractive destinations for hikers. The research (conducted by Simone Meyer) set out to establish the reasons why people go hiking there, how they perceive the landscape and more specifically whether the would be willing to pay for the (further) protection of this conservation and in what way. Results show that the segment of people above fifty dominate the number of hikers in summer. Many of them are recurrent visitors. The area is cherished for its number of hiking trails, the lovely landscapes that offers wide views and the special atmosphere of the high moores and also because it is not crowded. The label UNESCO Biosphere that was awarded to the Entlebuch plays a secondary role for them and many barely seem to have heard of it. The willingness to pay is quite low since many argue that they pay for their taxes for the protection of landscapes. Most, however, would be willing to pay a small sum if it is voluntary and not compulsory. A problem could arise if visitor numbers increase, because the silence and solitude away from the hustle bustle of the cities could be compromised that way.

Leading questions:
How do summer tourists in Soerenberg perceive the Entlebuch?
