Abstract:
Since 1967 ETH Zurich owns a high altitude research station situated directly below the Albula pass with the pastures ranging in altitude from 1900 to 2600 m a.s.l. The farm area comprises 234 hectares of own pasture and about 200 hectares of leased area. The pastures allow summer grazing of about 150 livestock units (dairy cows, suckler beef, heifers, sheep and horses) during 75 to 80 days per year. The farm buildings at 2000 m a.s.l. provide accomodation for staff and researchers, give shelter to the animals in the case of snowfall and allow the storage of feed. Furthermore, they offer the opportunity to carry out balance experiments indoors with cattle, and comprise primary laboratories for sample preparation. Equipment such as a mobile milking parlour and a balance are available to perform experiments with livestock on pasture.
Research is focussed on livestock systems to sustainably use alpine pastures and on the physiological and ecological effects of high altitude grazing. Research projects involve dairy cattle, suckler beef, heifers and sheep. The location of the research station also gives the excellent opportunities to study high altitude vegetation grown on different soils (rock types).
