Abstract:
The alpine timberline is a rarely known biotope. It is situated between the montane spruce forests and the subalpine dwarf shrub heath. This biotope is known to harbour an over average number of arthropod species. The current work shows this empirically for spider communities. Therefore, nine pitfall traps were positioned in different distances from the stem around four Norway spruce trees each for one year. In a first section, we investigated the influence of three parameters on the abundance and species composition of the spider communities: the relative distance to the stem, the degree of coverage of the trap with branches and the vegetation cover around the respective traps. The species numbers and abundance of Linyphiidae decreased with the distance to the stem, while both increased in Lycosidae and Gnaphosidae. 11 of the 14 most common species showed significant correlations with the distance to the stem, 10 also with the branch cover and two with the vegetation cover. Open land species preferred the areas distant from the stem, while forest species preferred the areas close to the stem. The second section is a summary of faunistic spider data collected in this barely known biotope. It also includes results from other collection methods applied by the Natural History Museum of Basel at the same time in the same area. Altogether, 93 spider species were found, of which five were new to the canton Grisons and one found for the first time in Switzerland, Maro lehtineni.
