Abstract:
The spider species Caracladus zamoniensis spec. nov. was described for the first time from a specimen collected on Alp Flix. A literature search and the checking of museum specimens showed that the newly described species was collected since 100 years, but not recognised as new species. Its distribution covers the subalpine areas of the whole Western Alps. A revision of the genus, including a phylogenetic analysis, showed that the new species is sister to C. avicula, a rarely collected species endemic to the Alps (and also occurring on Alp Flix). Other closely related species occur in Eastern Asia and the Alps. All known species of the genus Caracladus seem to be winter active and preferably occur in mid to high ranges of mountains.
