Abstract:
This master thesis deals with two main issues: (1) the protection of the abiotic nature and (2) the promotion of geotourism in a protected area, the Gruyère Pays-d’Enhaut Regional Nature Park (Switzerland). In a fist step, the geomorphological heritage in the region was identified and assessed. Special attention was given to the degree of protection of the sites under the various laws existing at the different administrative levels. The assessment was carried out using the method developed by the Institute of Geography and Sustainability (IGD) of the University of Lausanne, partly modified (addition of new criteria concerning the present use and management 2
of the sites). 33 sites were inventoried in the Park area (503 km ), which are related to seven geomorphological contexts (fluvial, karstic, glacial, periglacial, gravitational, organic and structural) and reflect the diversity of landforms in the area and the presence of several witnesses of past glacial periods. The inventoried sites have a high scientific value and high ecological and aesthetic values, which underline the richness of the geomorphological heritage in the Park. In a second step, interviews with the main stakeholders of tourism and nature conservation in the region were conducted, in order to complete the inventory. Finally, two main conclusions based on the inventory and the interviews were drawn: (1) The geomorphological heritage is relatively well protected, but this protection is mostly indirect. Sites which are not connected with biotopes are threatened. Therefore, a better recognition of the abiotic heritage by the law is necessary. (2) Natural and cultural heritages are the core of the tourist offer in the area. Projects of promotion of the geomorphological heritage could, therefore, be easily added to the actual tourist offer. In addition, such initiatives could be encouraged by the Regional Nature Park.
