Abstract:
The Aletsch region is located in the Swiss canton of Valais in the Alps and, as a touristic area and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch, is affected by climate change. Therefore, this thesis will focus on the changes caused by climate change and the effects on nature-based tourism and its actors. For the study a multi-method approach was chosen which consists of two interviews with nature-based tourism actors, the evaluation of meteorological and glaciological data, a protocol of an event on the topic „nature-based tourism“ and the creation of cognitive maps by tourists. Additionally, a field study visit took place in the area. Actors in the nature-based tourism sector are affected by the climate change in a negative way, for example by the closure of paths, and in a positive way, e.g by receiving media attention due to the retreat of glaciers. An environmental education program increases visitors awareness of changes in the Aletsch region, whereby both the natural and the cultural landscape are valued.
