Abstract:
Switzerland is one of the first countries in the world to carry out measurements of its biological diversity. The Swiss Federal Office for the Environment FOEN started up Biodiversity Monitoring Switzerland (BDM) for this purpose. Under the auspices of this project, experts go out regularly to monitor the number of species and plants in the field. They then use evenly-spread random samples from all over the country to draw conclusions about Switzerland as a whole.

These data provide an important basis for the formation of future nature protection policy. BDM can recognise early on developments in the field of biodiversity, trigger appropriate measures and also show whether they have the desired effect (method). This is why the project covers both the state of biodiversity and the influences and measures related to its change. An example: The federal government has for some years been subsidising the leaving of strips of fallow land (known as “Buntbrachen”) in cultivated areas. BDM data allow conclusions to drawn as to whether these direct payments really do result in a recovery of diversity levels.

Around 200 biologists are currently employed by the Swiss federal government to seek out species of plants and animals. Their work is coordinated from a central point. The coordination office also performs the task of informing the public about the background of the programme and its results.

Just as the Dow Jones Index expresses the progress of business results in figures, BDM shows how our natural capital is getting on. The data must be reliable in both cases. This is why BDM rates independent quality monitoring so highly.
