    Abstract:
Nature-based tourism means a responsible visit of natural areas and cultural landscapes which are close to nature. Its organization and realization is developed out of the regional requirements by the participation of the involved persons and institutions. The aim is to respect the environment as well as the social, cultural and economic circumstances and to protect, promote and finance them in a sustainable way. In nature-based tourism visitors shall be enabled to experience nature and culture and are sensitized for the environment in an active way and by using all senses.
It can be assumed that nature-based tourism will get an increased importance in the next years as an alternative to mass tourism. Nature-based tourism in its various forms is an important element of an ecological-sustainable development in the alpine space.
So far no generally accepted quality standards for nature-based tourism in the alpine space exist. But such standards are important to assure the quality of nature-based tourism - as part of a comprehensive sustainable development. Based on those standards it would be possible to develop adequate indicators to monitor and manage the development of nature-based tourism.
The project aims to develop alpine wide quality standards of nature-based tourism and to anchor them in the research discussion and in the touristic practice. Therefore next to a broad literature review the inclusion of a representative sample of touristic actors from the different alpine countries and –regions is envisaged. They shall be included by expert interviews, an alpine wide survey and a workshop.

    Leading questions:
  • What are the quality standards for nature-based tourism in the Alps?
  • How can nature-based tourism contribute to the promotion of biodiversity, habitats and landscape quality?
