Abstract:
Soil microbial activity and dynamics of soil organic matter: effect of exposure and litter quality at Plan Posa (Swiss National Park)
Considering the role of soils in global warming, carbon sequestration is a significant soil function. It depends not only on the chemistry and composition of the litter but also on the chemistry of the soil, the activity of the soil organisms and climatic properties. Under different climate and litter qualities, various quasi equlibira between mineralization and sequestration of soil organic matter will establish. The hill of Plan Posa in the Swiss National Park is an excellent area to study the interrelationship between the dynamic of soil organic matter and its controlling properties in an alpine region. At this hill, all posssible exposures are available and, depending on the exposure, different microclimatic conditions are prevailing, governing soil biological activity and the composition of the vegetation. We will measure soil chemical properties, concentrations and pools of soil organic carbon, various fractions of soil organic matter (labile and stable pools), soil biological activity and various biomarkers, indicating the composition of the soil microbial community and the quality of soil organic matter. This will be done close to the long-term vegetation-plots established decades ago by Lüdi.

Leading questions:
Arbeitshypothesen:
