Abstract:
Relationships between erosion and vegetation in a burnt area within mountain pine forest in 1951, a stand of mountain pine forest near „Il Fuorn“ burned down accidentally. This 6-ha area has since remained unforested, and only pioneer vegetation has developed in large parts of the burnt area. It is assumed that soil erosion and grazing jointly prevent forest re-establishment. This project investigated the relationships between erosion, plant species composition and vegetation structure. A vegetation survey was conducted in July 2012 across the burnt area (below 200 m a.s.l.). Erosion activity was assessed visually, and soil samples were analysed for organic matter content. We found that the species composition of the burnt area is clearly different from that of the forest, while there is little differentiation with respect to erosion within the burnt area. Soil organic matter content is clearly related to vegetation cover. Wide C:N ratios suggest extremely low nutrient availability in the burnt area although this may be improved as vegetation cover increases.
