Abstract:
There is a growing awareness of the impacts that climate change could have on the natural
environment, on humans and their economic activities. Climate is an essential resource for
tourism, and especially for the nature and sport tourism segments. Changing climate
and weather patterns at touristic destinations can significantly affect the tourists’ comfort and
their travel decisions. Changing demand patterns and tourist flows will have impacts on
tourism businesses. Correspondingly, this research aims to investigate the possible impacts
of climate change on the tourism business in the winter season in the Swiss National Park
region.
The results of this study should clarify if the tourism businesses located in the Swiss National
Park region are affected by the climate change in the winter season and, if yes, how is this
happening. Moreover, the paper will
Leading questions:
The main question that will guide this research is: What are the possible impacts of climate
change on the tourism business in the winter season in the Swiss National Park region?
Several sub questions have been formulated (see Chapter 2.1), and by answering them, the
reader will have a better understanding of the topic. There are two options how the questions
will be answered: through literature review and through fieldwork. Some of the questions are
referring to more general aspects (with a plethora of existing literature) while others are very
specific, and there might be a lack in the literature, therefore field research is needed.
The fieldwork includes at a first stage expert interviews with researchers having knowledge in
the topic of climate change impacts in the SNP region. Next phase includes interviews with
touristic operators (such as hotels and cable cars representatives) located in the Swiss
National Park region.
