Abstract:
Soil development and plant-fungus-soil interactions on silicate and calcareous bedrocks at selected alpine locations of Jules Favre (1955) in the Swiss National Park and its surroundings Alpine ecosystems are considered to be very vulnerable to climate change. There is, therefore, a high interest to investigate them in more detail, and, in addition, to establish the basis for comparisons for subsequent sampling by future generations of researcher. Alpine soils are both complex and dynamic systems, and they play an important role in the ecosystem services. In less developed soils, as they occur in the alpine zone of the Swiss National Park, the quality of the organic matter and, thus, its degradability plays a central role in the nutrient cycling and for other soil functions. It is now generally accepted that the work of Jules Favre on the alpine fungi from the Swiss National Park and its surroundings is the basis for the alpine mycology. Between 1941 and 1953 he made about 66 excursions into these alpine regions, and in his pioneering work (Favre 1955) he described over 200 species of fungi, and many of them as new species.
In our project we aim to examine the soil development below the carpets and lawns of the alpine plants Dryas octopetala, Salix spp. and Polygonum viviparum. Under these carpets, specific microclimatic conditions occur. However, for the development of soils, besides of the climatic conditions, geology, plant type, or the composition of the soil organisms play a role as well. This project also focusses on the plant-fungal interactions called 'mycorrhiza'. In particular, the distribution pattern of the mycorrhizal fungi along altitudinal gradients will be studied, with the influence of biotic and abiotic factors. It is expected that on one hand a number of unique species of fungi and / or their species composition can be identified, and on the other hand, the driving forces and possible threats to these fragile ecosystems are detected.

Leading questions:
