Abstract:
Springs are unique ecotones at the interface between surface water and groundwater, which provide relatively constant environmental conditions for their inhabitants. In alpine springs conditions are especially harsh and organisms have to be adapted to low water temperatures, a very short growing season in summer and oligotrophic conditions. Springs in the SNP were intensively studied in 2012 for the first time after the study of Nadig in 1942. After four years of investigations we now have a first comprehensive insight into the macroinvertebrate fauna of the springs in the SNP. The substrate composition seems to be of special importance for the composition of the macroinvertebrate assemblages. The springs investigated so far were located in the core area, where the geology consists of dolomite limestone. The Macun plateau is of crystalline origin. The goal of the bachelor thesis of Guillaume Arnet is to characterise approximatley10 springs at the Macun plateau and to compare them with the springs investigated in the core area of the SNP. The springs will be evaluated in July 2016, physical and chemical parameters will be monitored and the macroinvertebrates will be sampled quantitatively and qualitatively. We will get a first insight into the springs at the Macun plateau and will have valuable results how the geology might influence the faunistic composition of natural alpine springs.
