Abstract:
Title: Capacity, accessibility, and actual use of cultural ecosystem services in European National Parks.
National parks in Europe provide many cultural ecosystem services (CES) e.g. opportunities for recreation, the experience of “wild nature” and the perception of landscapes of high aesthetic value. However, the scientific assessment of CES is still poorly developed, especially when compared to provisioning and regulating services. Within the ECOPOTENTIAL project we aim to assess the capacity, accessibility and actual use (flow) of a set of CES within selected National Parks using traditional (e.g. earth observation data, topographic data) and rather modern geodata from crowd-sourced geo information platforms such as OpenStreetMap. Besides, to achieve a strong evidence for actual use we will apply participatory approaches that comprise a) focus groups with the national park´s managers and rangers, and b) a mobile application (app) to be developed, tested and implemented for the use by visitors, managers and rangers of the national parks along with a framework for a citizen science program. The app and the citizen science framework will be provided to the NP´s management to achieve a sustainable implementation and operation.
