    Abstract:
The impact of altitude and exposition on the soil microbiome assessed by soil transfer on alpine summits along an altitudinal gradient.

Temperatures are expected to rise in the frame of climate change. High alpine environments are expected to be especially susceptible as many organisms living there are cold-adapted. Changes in elevation and expositions involve changes in microclimatic regimes (temperature, precipitation, exposure to sunlight) and can be used as a proxy for the impacts implicated by climate change. In a soil transfer experiment from higher to lower mountain summit sites and
between North and South exposition we investigate how microbial communities in high alpine soils react to raised temperature and other microclimatic conditions associated with elevation and exposition. The summits used in this project were established as a part of the GLORIA project. Within the GLORIA project we analyzed microbial parameters in soil samples from these sites and we were able to show interesting correlations between the microbial community structure and elevation, exposition and soil physicochemical parameters. By transferring soil along an altitudinal gradient and between opposite expositions on the summits we aim at establishing a more close association between microbial community structure and microclimatic conditions at the sites.

    Leading questions:
