Avalanche hazard maps are prepared by engineers and land-planners. These experts rely both on practical experience and calculation models. Until 2000, they used the analytical Voellmy-Salm model to estimate velocity, flowheight and runout distance. This model only yields results at some points (two or three) along the avalanche track. The danger of powder snow avalanches has mostly been ignored, because no suitable model existed before.

In 2000, AVAL-1D, our one-dimensional computer-based model, has reached a level of development where it could be introduced to practitioners. The model predicts runout distances, flow velocities and impact pressures of both flowing and powder snow avalanches along the entire avalanche track.

Important results:
* Continuous information about flow height, velocity and pressure is given along the entire avalanche track (c.f. analytical Voellmy-Salm model which only give results for specific points).
* Runout distances and mass distribution in the runout zone.
* Animation of avalanche flow.
* XY-Plots at user-selected points along the avalanche track (time-history).
* Profile-Plots at user-selected points for powder snow avalanches.
* Possibility to overlay different simulation runs to visualize sensitivity studies.

* Our goal is to provide snow avalanche professionals with a simple, stable and well-calibrated simulation tool.
* The software is user-friendly and not expensive.
* Avalanche track profiles can easily be generated from maps; a wide range of output results can be visualised graphically.
