General information and objectives

SPARC (Stratosphere-troposphere Processes And their Role in Climate) is a core project of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP).
Founded in 1992, SPARC has coordinated for almost two decades high-level research activities of increasing relevance for understanding Earth system processes.
SPARC research outcomes contributed significantly to international assessments, such as the assessments of ozone depletion by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the climate assessments by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
SPARC concentrates on bottom-up driven research, providing coordination and support, which lead to bite-sized deliverables of significant added scientific value.
SPARC activities are organized under three overarching themes and result from an integration of process studies, observations and modelling.
The Scientific Steering Group (SSG) provides leadership for the SPARC programme and represents a broad spectrum of disciplines and nationalities, and includes both junior and senior scientists. The SPARC SSG is supported by the SPARC Office, theme leaders and activity leaders.
All scientists enrolled in SPARC initiatives and committed to SPARC research work on a voluntary basis and often spend time and resources outside regular office hours on SPARC projects. The continuing success of SPARC relies on the input of these people.
The SPARC Data Centre was opened in June 1999. The Centre archives SPARC data to facilitate exchanges between participating scientists.
