Research Focus of the Institute:

One of the key tasks of the Legal Services and Safety Division is the processing of all legal questions arising within the Swiss Federal Office of Energy. It formulates draft laws and ordinances, manages official consultation procedures, prepares policy statements (messages) to Parliament and accompanies the parliamentary process. It prepares licensing decisions in the field of nuclear energy and issues planning approval and operating licences for high-pressure gas and oil pipelines, as well as for electrical installations (particularly high-voltage transmission lines). It is also responsible for the structural safety, supervision and emergency planning of the more than 200 major dams in Switzerland. It formulates principles governing the management of radioactive waste in Switzerland, and is in charge of the selection procedure for deep geological repositories. The Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC) in Würenlingen reports to this division. It comprises the following sections: • Legal Services and Pipelines Section • Electricity and Water Rights Section • Disposal of Radioactive Waste Section • Dam Safety Section • Secretariat NSC
