Specialties of Jean-Paul Theurillat:
Flora, vegetation and vegetation ecology of the European Alps and Central Apennines

Long-term monitoring of altitudinal diversity gradients of vascular plants, upper treeline, vegetation and phenology at the subalpine-alpine ecocline

Research on diversity gradients is performed in the Valais and in the Central Apennines (Italy) on the relationship between temperature gradient and diversity. The evolution of vegetation and floristic richness is monitored with several permanent plots. The evolution of a natural treeline is monitored for cembran pine (Pinus cembra) in the Valais. Temperature and precipitation measurements are made in the studied transects.
The research originated in several projects: (1) "Climatic change at and above the subalpine-alpine ecocline: Impact on plant diversity and distribution" that was initially developed during the SPP programme (1993-1999) (2) "Long-term dynamics of the vegetation at the subalpine-alpine ecocline during the Holocene: comparative study in the Aletsch region, Val d'Arpette and Furkapass (Valais, Switzerland)" (1998-2001) that was sustained by SNSF (3) "The European dimension of the Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments (GLORIA) - a contribution to GTOS" (2001- ) initiated in the 5th European Framework Programme and coordinated by G. Grabherr (Vienna) (4) "Elevation gradient of vascular plant distribution in the Central Apennines: diversity patterns and potential impact of global change" sustained by MIUR (2005-2008) and now a part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) network (2008-).
