General information and objectives

IGBP was an international scientific research program that studies the interactions between biological, chemical and physical processes and how they impact (and are impacted by) with human systems. The Programme is built on interdisciplinarity, international networking and scientific integration. It addresses questions where an integrated, international approach is necessary. IGBP adds value to a large number of individual, national and regional research projects through the integration of activities in order to achieve enhanced scientific understanding of the Earth System.

The program ended in 2015. Most core projects continue to operate under the new umbrella program Future Earth

Key issues of the IGBP werre:

  • Atmosphere: How is the chemistry of the global atmosphere regulated, and what is the role of biological processes in producing and consuming greenhouse gases? (IGAC)

  • Land: How will global change affect terrestrial ecosystems? (GLP)

  • Ocean: How do ocean biogeochemical processes influence and respond to climate change? (GLOBEC, IMBER)

  • Land-Atmosphere Interface: How do interacting physical, chemical, and biological processes (which transport and transform energy and matter across the land-atmosphere interface) control atmospheric composition and affect the climate, land cover and human health? (iLEAPS)

  • Land-Ocean Interface: How will changes in land use, sea level and climate alter coastal ecosystems, and what are the wider consequences of these changes? (LOICZ)

  • Ocean-Atmosphere Interface: What is the role that ocean-atmosphere interactions play in the regulation of climate and global change? (SOLAS)

  • System-wide Integration:

    • How are humans affecting the Earth's environmental cycles, and how can we quantify the interactions and feedbacks between the environmental systems and human activities and decisions? (AIMES)

    • How can records of past climate and environmental changes be best used to aid in interpreting current and future einvironmental change? (PAGES)
