General information and objectives

The IHP collaborates with UNEP, WHO, MAB and the WMO to develop the scientific and technological capacity that will permit the rational management of water resources, both in terms of quantity and quality. Central to this mandate is the building up of national capacities to monitor and manage freshwater resources. For the period 1990-95, the IHP is concentrating its efforts on 3 major objectives:
  • promotion of a better understanding, through interdisciplinary studies, of how the global hydrological cycle works and how human activities affect it;

  • improvement of regional and country level data on available water supplies, both surface and groundwater (water resource management for sustainable development);

  • upgrading the training of hydrologists, particularly in the developing world where there is a growing gap between available resources and human needs.
