General information and objectives

Water is an essential element for the life of people, animals, and plants. It also fulfills ecological functions. These functions guarantee the diverse use possibilities and are an essential element to sustain the aquatic ecosystems. Including the public need for drinking water supply, society today depends on this natural resource for many economic activities and activities of daily life.
Goals of the National Research Programme “Sustainable Water Management” (NFP/NRP 61) :
  • Development of scientific foundations, methods, and strategies as well as initiation of solutions for future challenges in the area of use of water resources;
  • Investigation of the effects of climate and social changes on water resources;
  • Examination of risk management and user conflicts from a comprehensive perspective;
  • Development of efficient and sustainable water resources management systems.
To achive this, the NFP will determine the capacity of natural systems to absorb the effects of changes in environmental conditions (climatic conditions) in order to develop intelligent and forward-looking strategies for sustainable and integral water resources management. The two principal aspects of this programme are as follows:
  • The first part will be to determine the capacity of natural systems to absorb the effects of changes in environmental conditions (in particular with regard to extreme situations). At the same time, changes in the water cycle in connection with modified consumption structures will be examined.
  • The second part will focus on cross-sector strategies for sustainable water consumption in all areas of consumption and production, ensuring the quality of drinking water through the integrated management of water resources and developing new, appropriate water management systems.

The results of this NFP are intended for both the water-supply sector and the various authorities responsible for providing protection against risks involving water (flooding, drought, water quality) at federal, cantonal and local levels.
The NFP/NRP 61 will operate with CHF 12 million for a research duration of four years.
