General information and objectives

Population growth, urbanization, and rapid industrialization have exerted great pressure on the natural resources of Temperate East Asia. Critical global change issues within the region include food and water security, possible changes to the monsoon system, air quality, climate variability, and human adaptation to environments' changes. The START-Temperate East Asia Regional Center (TEA-RC) was established in 1995. START activities in Temperate East Asia are guided by the START-Temperate East Asia Regional Committee (TEACOM), and coordinated by the TEA-RC, which also serves as Secretariat to TEACOM. In addition, a member of the TEA-RC staff serves as Liaison Officer to the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) for the East Asia Region.

The main research objectives of START TEA RC are:
  • Research of global and regional environmental changes regulations.
  • Key processes study of climate-terrestrial ecological system interaction in Asia monsoon region.
  • Development of regional environmental system (climate-ecology-society-economy-hydrology) integrated model.
  • Impacts of global change on regional climate system and study on orderly human adaptation.
  • Comprehensive integrated study on the aridification in Northern China.
