General information and objectives

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a coalition of more than 120 international companies which share a commitment to the environment and to the principles of economic growth and sustainable development.

The WBCSD was formed in January 1995 through a merger between the Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD) in Geneva and the World Industry Council for the Environment (WICE) in Paris - the two organizations which led the business response to the challenges arising from the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio in 1992.

With members in 36 countries representing more than 20 major industrial sectors, the WBCSD is a powerful business voice on sustainable development issues - and plays an important role in developing closer cooperation between business, government and others and in encouraging high standards of environmental management in business itself.

The Mission of the WBCSD is to:
  • provide business leadership as a catalyst for change towards sustainable development; and
  • promote the attainment of eco-efficiency through high standards of environmental and resource management in business.

    Its Objectives are to:
  • be a leading business advocate for issues regarding the environment and sustainable development;
  • participate in policy development to create the right framework conditions for business to make an effective contribution towards sustainable development;
  • demonstrate progress in environmental and resource management in business and share leading edge practices among members; and
  • contribute to a sustainable future for developing nations and nations in transition.

    Strengthening the Role of Business - Working in Partnership

    Closer partnership between the public and private sectors is needed to progress the post-Rio agenda. The WBCSD is working with a range of IGOs, NGOs and business organizations in key policy and other areas, and maintains close links with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).

    Business in partnership with the public sector, can contribute workable sustainable development solutions to problems in developing countries and countries in transition. The WBCSD benefits from the expanding network of regional and national BCSDs and other business-led partners worldwide to promote vigorous business leadership at the local level.

    Membership and Funding

    Membership of the WBCSD is by invitation to companies from around the world which seek to provide business leadership in sustainable development and environmental performance.

    Member companies commit to support the Executive Committee composed of a Chairman, three Vice-Chairmen from different regions and up to nine CEOs oversee the work of the WBCSD.

    An Executive Director with a secretariat in Geneva is responsible for managing the activities of the WBCSD.
