General information and objectives

The goal of COST is to ensure that Europe holds a strong position in the field of scientific and technical research for peaceful purposes, by increasing European co-operation and interaction in this field.

COST is a framework for scientific and technical cooperation, allowing the coordination of national research on a European level. COST Actions consist of basic and precompetitive research as well as activities of public utility.

COST was founded in 1971 as a European initiative consisting today of 32 member countries (the EU countries and 17 others). Coordination costs are covered for the EU members by the European Commission, otherwise by the corresponding countries; individual countries finance the participation of their own scientists in research projects.

Of particular relevance for climate research are the COST actions in the field of meteorology and the recent COST Actions 611 (Physico-chemical behaviour of atmospheric pollutants) and 614 (Impact of elevated CO2, climate change and atmospheric pollutants on tree physiology).
