General information and objectives

The aim of GLORIA is to establish an effective long-term observation network for detecting the effects of climate change on mountain biota on a global scale.

The alpine life zone represents the only biogeographic unit on land with a world-wide distribution. Thus, high mountain ecosystems provide a unique opportunity for comparative climate impact research.
The challenge of GLORIA is to implement a network of standardised monitoring settings in all major mountain systems on Earth. This can only be attained by applying a cost-effective and time-saving approach that is workable even under expedition conditions.

The Multi-Summit approach - GLORIA's basic strategy - will provide such a feasible method. This method is designed to compare biodiversity patterns along the fundamental climatic gradients, vertically as well as horizontally.
