General information and objectives

The National Centre for Competence in Research, NCCR Climate, is a long-term project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. It is a network of research groups from The University of Bern, Basel, Geneva, ETH Zurich, and a number of Federal Agencies. Part of the network is also Swiss Re, a world-leading reinsuring company. The ultimate goal of the research is to explore the predictability of climate on time scales from seasons to centuries.

The project is headed by Prof. Thomas Stocker, University of Bern, where also the Leading House is located. The program has formally started on April 1, 2001. The maximum duration is 12 years.

Research within NCCR Climate is coordinated in four work packages:

  • Past Climate

  • Future Climate

  • Climate Impacts

  • Climate Risk Assessment
