General information and objectives
POLLUMET is a coordinated research program initiated in to study in an interdisciplinary way pollutant emissions, movements of air masses, atmospheric chemistry and pollutant dispersion and deposition. POLLUMET focuses on the following scientific issues (POLLUMET, 1990, see below):- data collection and modelling of pollutant distributions over Switzerland;
Field measurement campaigns were conducted in 1990, 1991 and 1993, and these data have now been analysed. The future of POLLUMET is uncertain, because no secure source of long-term funding has been identified. In the past, the Federal Office of Environment, Forests and Landscape financed the infrastructure needed to coordinate the individual research projects, which were funded separately by proposals to the SNF. The POLLUMET Executive Committee has developed proposals for three new projects within the POLLUMET framework: ISTOM, to analyze time-series tropospheric ozone data, in particular with regard to assessing the role of meteorological factors in determining ozone concentrations; BAT, to determine regional fluxes of trace gases; and OSSOS, to study the production photo-oxidants on the southern flank of the Alps.
