General information and objectives
For several decades, the rates of economic growth, industrialization, urbanization and globalization have been faster in the Southeast Asia region than in most parts of the world. Together with continuing poverty and a steady rise in the population, this increase in economic activity has been exerting a great pressure on the region’s natural resources. Critical environmental change issues of high priority include adaptation to global change, the monsoon system, food and water security, coastal and forest degradation, air quality, sustainable development, loss of biodiversity, and climate variability. START’s research and capacity building activities in Southeast Asia address these issues.Last update: 5/6/22
